An exhibit by Zanele Muholi entitled Faces
and Phases has forever imprinted on my mind the power of the portrait.
images were burned into my soul as I stood in the middle of the room,
surrounded by strong, meaningful images of the women that are such a part of her body
of work. It moved me so much that I
simply had to go home and see what was brewing inside the portraits I had taken
awhile ago. In order to focus on
expression and the story, the removal of colour, which I originally believed to
be essential, did the trick.
I am happy
with these final images. They are not
Zanele Muholi but they are my attempt at looking deeper within. I am glad I reconnected with these wonderful people again through the eyes of inspiration.
